The Diaspora

"Diaspora” means the scattering of people from their ethnic roots, enforced or voluntary.

Jamaica is the 5th largest island in the Caribbean, having a land area of 4,244 sq miles, length of146 miles and width of 51 miles. With 2.8 million people on the island, Jamaica is the 3rd most populous English-speaking country in the Americas, after only the United States and Canada.

The Jamaican diaspora is large and strong! Approximately 800,000 Jamaicans live in the United Kingdom and about 231,110 live in Canada. In the United States, the count is about 900,000!

Florida has 13 of the top 25 US communities with the highest percentage of people claiming Jamaican ancestry and ***SOUTH MIAMI HEIGHTS (6.0%) is #18 ***

Of the U.S. communities with the most residents born in Jamaica, Florida has 36 of the top 50. AND SOUTH DADE IS #15 (PALMETTO ESTATES 33157, 12.6%)!!!

Since Jamaica has fully grown up (50 years independent this year!)
The South Dade Jamaican Diaspora Association is being established to connect Jamaicans in the south Dade communities with cultural events, opportunities to network and dialogue, and programs to give back Home and forward to the generations planted here.

If you are a Jamaican, by birth or ancestry, who lives in south Miami-Dade join
The South Dade Jamaican Diaspora Association.
